Precision Pest
“It’s important to act now for the future.”
Precision Pest Management Solutions Ltd was formed in 1996 and is proud to have a policy of minimal use of pesticides, and controls by environmental means which ensures that the environmental impact of their services is as low as practically possible. They avoid chemical treatments and believe that the essence of good pest control is in the management of the environmental conditions in the workplace.
As part of their commitment to the environment, Precision Pest joined the Net Zero Nation, powered by notch, Accelerator through Forth Ports and we spoke with George Houston, General Manager, about his motivations and challenges to become a Net Zero company.
Tell us about your Net Zero journey.
“We joined the Net Zero Nation Accelerator through Forth Ports. As a business we were increasingly asked about our carbon footprint so when we reviewed the Accelerator framework and methodology, we felt it was something we could work to.
“As well as being the right thing to do, reducing our carbon impact fits very well with the ethos of our business as we try to protect the environment by not using unnecessary pesticides. As well as it being something we could feel good about we also believe it can provide us with commercial opportunities.
Why notch?
“Getting accurate data is one of the biggest challenges. Our biggest category of carbon emissions is through our vehicles as we have a large fleet. We can get overall data but categorising them into vehicle type, size, petrol or diesel etc is more of a challenge. Overall, I’ve realised that getting data and inputting it is manageable by doing it in small chunks and on a regular basis which will lead to better and more detailed data collection. That’s my number one priority right now.
What are your priorities for Net Zero?
“We’re also looking at our suppliers and working with them to collect their carbon data. We have a large number of small suppliers so that’s a big task. Improving the robustness of our purchasing system will help.”
What advice would you give to companies beginning their Net Zero journey?
“My advice for those considering a Net Zero journey is to get started now rather than waiting another few years. It’s important to act now for the future.”
