BMP Worldwide is a wholly owned subsidiary of Andrew Industries Ltd, a privately owned industrial manufacturing group. BMP is a global company specialising in the manufacture and conversion of Technical Non-Woven Textiles for use in a diverse range of industrial equipment, including original equipment manufacturer for the global printing industry. The BMP division has grown organically through the integration of local manufacturing excellence and support with locations in the UK, USA, Malaysia, China and Mexico.

The team at notch have been working with the BMP to calculate the emissions of the division globally, and we spoke with David Ferris from BMP America, to talk about his experience of the process, using the software and the plans going forward

Why did you decide to begin carbon accounting?

Our parent company, Andrew Industries is based in the UK ,and in Europe there is more obligations to report carbon emissions than in the United States, so they drove the initiative. However, the regions including BMP America were very keen to get involved in the sustainability efforts and as a global group with agreed that moving forward we should all be aiming to reach Net Zero.

How have you found the process?

“We started to work on collecting data during 2023. A lot of the data was easy to track, such as electricity and water, but some details were more complicated to gather. For example, business travel took a large amount of effort as the only source of data we had was to go through our expense receipts.  We found the process necessary in order to develop our own system to include a mileage activity metric rather than just dollar expenses that we currently have.”

How do you find using notch?

“I found it straightforward. I basically have it open at my desk and every day I take a look at the numbers.  It’s been able to provide some insights such as the consistency across our carbon output year-on-year, which we can use to look at ways to make reductions. We currently keep the outputs within the Sustainability team, but I think, moving forward, we can look at sharing it among other departments who will find this information useful, such as Accounting, and we can start working on the goals and ambitions of the organisation together.  Working with the team at notch to help manage the capturing and recording of data has been really helpful.”

What are your next steps?

“We are starting to get queries in from our supply chain about our carbon output so we want to start tackling this. We know it’s a big task as we need to broaden the data capture so we can include it across all the operations.”

What is your advice for anyone beginning their carbon accounting journey?

“There is a lot of data to gather which can initially appear intimidating. It may take a bit of time, but it is worth it in the end.”
