Forth Ports is the UK’s third largest port group, handling around 41 million tonnes of cargo every year. As a critical part of the UK’s supply chain infrastructure, they provide safe, reliable, and efficient services to a diverse range of customers and sectors. Their focus is on helping businesses simplify supply chains, reduce costs, and maintain consistency, transparency, and high-quality service.

As part of their commitment to sustainability, Forth Ports is leading initiatives to help their supply chains accelerate progress toward Net Zero. A key element of this work is their support of Net Zero Nation – the accelerator programme in Scotland powered by Notch – which is designed to guide SMEs on their carbon reduction journey.

We spoke with Jakki Ireland, Senior Procurement Manager at Grangemouth, about why Forth Ports chose to partner with Notch and the impact it has had.

Why did Forth Ports choose Notch?

“Our suppliers needed support – many felt they didn’t have a voice when it came to Net Zero. They wanted to do the right thing but didn’t know where to start.

When we explored the market, most carbon accounting platforms offered little more than an annual report. What we wanted was something more meaningful – a way to build suppliers’ understanding of their emissions and give them guidance on managing carbon reduction over time.

With over 1,300 suppliers, ranging from £500 turnover businesses to £30m companies, it’s vital that we can demonstrate what good looks like and provide a roadmap to help SMEs work toward our wider carbon reduction strategy. Net Zero Nation, powered by Notch, does exactly that.”

How does the Accelerator model support this journey?

“This is where Net Zero Nation stands out. The notch platform helps us capture carbon data, but the accelerator goes far beyond that. It provides knowledge sharing, clear explanations of complex legislation, and hands-on support for SMEs as they manage their transition to Net Zero.

Suppliers who were initially hesitant have become some of the strongest advocates. They value the learning, the collaboration, and the opportunity to connect with peers – even with competitors – in a space where everyone is united by the same goal.

Over the last year, uptake has grown significantly, with enthusiasm building across our supplier base. Earlier participants are now mentoring new cohorts, creating a powerful ripple effect throughout the supply chain.

The networking opportunities are invaluable – suppliers tell us it’s worth its weight in gold. This isn’t just a programme; it’s a movement. Together, we’re building a circular economy and moving Scotland closer to its Net Zero goals.”

Working as One Team

“At Forth Ports, we believe that Net Zero can only be achieved if we all work together – buyers, suppliers, and partners. Net Zero Nation, powered by Notch, gives our supply chain the tools, knowledge, and community support to make that possible.

When it comes to Net Zero, we’re all Scotland. We’re one team, working toward one goal: lowering carbon emissions.”
